Heather u16(Derbyshire League) girls played a League Championship Play oFF yesterday.

Played in unbelievable heat ,the girls were magnificent on and off the pitch.

Having won the DGGL Cup on Thursday night, and celebrating late into the night Sat at Presentation Night. Was always goingg to be a tight affair.

Playing Buxton Warriors ,winners of the North League.Needless to say Heather won 2-0 with goals from Emma Shadbolt and fittingly in her last game Lauren(Lol) Cartwright.

That's the season over for us.

Three trophies

Some of the girls hopefully will make the step up into the Ladies Team next season.

Well done to all involved at Heather in making this a great first season for us at the Club

Steve

Hi people.

The ladies beat Marlborough Rovers yesterday 5-1 and with Harborough Town dropping points in their game it means that Heather go top of the league with one game to play!

This game is on Sunday 27th April 2pm kick off at Heather. They face Harborough Town who are a game in hand and one point below. If Heather win, they win the league!! It has been a great season for the girls and they deserve to win this league. Heather are unbeaten in 2008, they have scored 65 goals in 15 games and only letting 16 in. A Great record but it all comes down to one game! Please come and show your support!

It’s Saturday 9th February and Brighton (my team) are playing at Cheltenham for the 2nd time this season and against them for the 4th time. As we also have a home league match against them on 19th February, I decided to give this one a miss (a good decision as it turned out, as Brighton managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by conceding two stoppage time goals – I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching that!).
So, where to go? I normally try to visit non-floodlit grounds on spare Saturdays and try to get to floodlit grounds for midweek games, but being without a car and no sign of a prospective lift, I decided to head for Heather St. John’s of the Midland Combination Premier Division, as its somewhat rural location makes it impossible for a midweek trip by public transport, and, indeed, not that easy on a Saturday!
Having pestered the secretary, Mr. McDowell, on Friday morning to check that the fixture against Pilkington XXX was correct and that there was no problem with the state of the pitch (us Groundhoppers get paranoid with checking fixtures, for fear of turning up for a match to find locked gates and empty grounds because one of the teams is involved in a County Cup replay or some such, or the opposition has been struck down with flu and can’t raise a team – it does happen!), I planned the trip. This involved a train from the new London St. Pancras station to Leicester, a bus to Coalville and then a further bus to Heather.
Everything went to plan, even allowing for a stop for breakfast on the long walk from Leicester rail station to the bus station. However the bacon must have been over salty, as on arrival at Heather at 13:25, I was in need of a drink or two. The nearest pub to the bus stop was the Crown, but, despite having 3 handpumps, had no Real Ale, and as this is my favoured tipple, I moved on to the Queen’s Head, where I was able to drink a couple of pints of Marston’s bitter. Whilst in the pub, a group of Pilkington fans came in and told me that they had just walked down from the football club and were very impressed by the facilities. Therefore I supped up and headed there myself.
I paid my money at the recently built (I was informed) turnstile block and bought a programme, an excellent production produced by Di Everett, although she doesn’t admit to it in the programme itself (why not - I’d be proud to). I was greeted by Mr. ??????? , an ex secretary and stalwart of the club, who obviously recognised me as a groundhopper (is it that obvious?). He very kindly bought me a cup of coffee and explained a bit about the history of the club and the future plans to build separate dressing rooms for the 2 outside pitches and an all weather training area as well. Not bad for a village of about 900 inhabitants! The whole set-up is very impressive, an excellent clubhouse with bar and kitchen facilities, a stand on the far side of the pitch and the unique feature of the 2 dugouts with a press box above.
The match, which I thought might be fairly close as it was 11th v 6th, turned into a rout, with Heather winning 6-0, (4-0 at half time), in front of 49(?) spectators. A hat-trick was scored by the very lively Dan Quinn, although his day could have been marred by a stricter referee following an incident near the end of the match. In fact there were a couple of such incidents as Pilkington got frustrated, but the referee sensibly dealt with them without producing a rush of red cards. A very fine performance by Heather, which will hopefully see them moving up the table, although they have played more games than most.
After the match I was very kindly invited to stay for a post match meal of faggot, peas and chips, which, as the bus wasn’t until 17:30, I was happy to accept to set me up for the journey home. All in all, one the best footballing days out I’ve had in a long while and Heather one of the friendliest, no, definitely the friendliest club I have visited. Good luck for the future.
P.S. – I got home at 22:00, just in time for Match of the Day!
